Flight Simulators

Technology that Expands the Horizon

FRASCA RTD

The Frasca Reconfigurable Training Device (RTD) is our newest FAA, part 141 approved flight simulator. The RTD can be configured as a Piper Archer G1000 and a Piper Seminole with a wrap-around visual display system.  The device includes digital sound simulation and provides a high level of realism that enables the students to transfer a greater amount of learning from the AATD to the aircraft.

Purdue Global University’s new professional flight degree program, of which Sterling is the sole flight training provider, has an entire course built around this device. Students will complete 25 simulator hours practicing a variety of different maneuvers and procedures including an IFR cross-country lab, instrument approaches, holds and more.

REDBIRD FMX

The Redbird FMX is a revolutionary, full-motion, Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD) that is FAA, part 141 approved. The Redbird can be configured for multiple airplane cockpits including G1000 and multi-engine. With greater than 200° visibility, courtesy of wrap-around screens, the Redbird is capable of stunning visuals to enhance the realism of the simulation. This versatile simulator is integrated into our training programs for both Sterling Flight Training and Airline Training Solutions. Domestic and international students can greatly benefit from the use of integrated simulator training by reducing the cost and duration of the course.

The Redbird is not only extremely beneficial for initial and accelerated courses but also recurrent training. It is FAA approved for Instrument Currency and Instrument Proficiency Checks (except circle-to-land). Current cockpit configurations include the Cessna 172SP G1000 and the Piper Seminole equipped with a Garmin 530/430 stack.

INSTRUMENT RATING

INITIAL TRAINING
The Sterling Flight Training IFR Rating Program is integrated with 14 hours of simulator time. Enroll as a
student and begin working toward your rating through our online ground school and simulator.

MAINTAINING CURRENCY
In order to act as Pilot in Command for a flight under IFR conditions you must maintain instrument currency. The FAA requires IFR pilots to conduct and log a minimum of six (6) Instrument Approach Procedures (IAPs) every six months.

To maintain currency a pilot must have performed and logged the following tasks within the preceding six calendar months.

  • Six instrument approaches
  • Holding procedures and tasks
  • Intercepting and tracking courses through the use of navigational electronic systems

Per these requirements, all approaches may be conducted in a simulation training devices, under IFR-simulated conditions.

PRIVATE PILOT

While simulator time doesn’t count toward license completion or currency requirements, private pilots and student pilots can still benefit from simulator training. If you are a PPL student, simulator training is a cost-effective way to keep what you’ve learned fresh or get some extra practice outside of the aircraft.
